Natural History Preserve In Action

Beneath tall cedar
On the banks of the Snohomish

-excerpt from H. Kwi Tlum Kadim Gobin

Water is the one of the key elements to life, yet in so many places it is being destroyed and polluted beyond use. The Tulalip Foundation has made great strides in keeping clean our local waters.

The Tulalip Foundation has used the donations from caring citizens to help improve the water in the northwest for everyone.

The Tulalip Foundation is in the process of creating a 47 acre Natural History Preserve. This remarkable piece of land includes almost 50% of an estuary wetland and represents some of the last remaining undisturbed estuary habitat in the Snohomish River estuary. Through creating this preservation the Tulalip Foundation will be able to protect a variety of natural habitats and natural features such as:

  • a small salmon bearing stream
  • a tidal slough and stream mouth
  • an estuary wetland complex
  • deciduous riparian forests and a variety of other mixed forest types
  • an old apple orchard and clearing
  • dense coniferous stands of Douglas fir and western red cedar
  • western hemlock hold trees over 75 ft high and likely are more than 100 years old

Quil Ceda Creek borders the preserve and with its natural hydrology provides unobstructed salmon fish passage from the estuary into quality upstream spawning and rearing habitat. The preserve is also home to many eagle roosting sites.
